Banner Advertising - Still Going Strong
At one time banner advertising was considered the best possible way to make money with a web site. While they
may not make as much money as they used to in the heydays of the 90s but they still can be used to provide a decent
amount of income if you know how to make the most of them on your website. Instead of selling space to individuals
you should now concentrate your advertising on larger companies that are relevant to your site, thus the more
relevant ads you have on your site the better your chance is to make money.
What to Look for
If you are going to invest space on your website to banner advertising there are some things that you need to
look for. Remember you are going to be renting out "prime" space on your website and as such you want to make sure
you are going to be getting the most value for that space. The most important thing that you need to look for is
companies that are selling products or information that is relevant to your site.
There are two main types of banner ads you can use, one is the CPC program where you get paid for every time
someone clicks on the banner and follows it to the linked web site. The other one is the CPM which is based on
paying you a certain amount of money for every 1,000 views of the banner. There is one other style of banner ad
known as CPA in which the visitor to your site clicks through to the advertiser's site and makes a purchase for
which you get paid a commission.
Control of the Ads
One of the things you need to make sure of is that as the web site owner you retain control over the banner
advertisement and the space it occupies. This way if the advertiser decides to run a campaign that you object to,
you have the option to ask them to send another banner or program. On top of this you should also retain control
over what type of banner they will ask you to display. In many cases, believe it or not those annoying flashing
banners do work.
Beware of which agencies you sign up with as many of them have quotas they work from, this means that each of
their ads has a click through quota and when it is met they stop paying and then they switch over to a default ad
that does not pay anything. The better agencies will give you control over the space during the hours that their
default ads are up so that you can place your own ads in the space or you can rent it out to other advertisers.
This gives you the chance to keep the space rented out and paying you as much as possible.
While the high paying days are long over, you can still make good money with banner advertising as long as you
stick with reliable agencies and know how to work the system to your advantage. You may also want to research the
agency and make sure that they have a reputation for paying promptly if not pass them by, there are plenty of
reliable agencies out there that do pay a decent rate on time every time.
